Our dream volunteer!

This post is dedicated to our workaway experience.

During the whole month of November Anna was traveling and I had to get myself some help at the pousada. This time we decided to invite a volunteer from the workaway project (http://www.workaway.info). We posted and announcement on our profile but still haven’t got any acceptable candidates, so I started browsing and sending out invitations. I am quite lazy, especially when it comes to making research and choosing. Mostly, I rely on my intuition and luck and go for one of the first options I have. And, was I lucky this time!
One of the profiles that I checked attracted my attention by a strange smudged photo. I thought: “Bad profile picture? This girl doesn’t care too much about looking pretty, she must be a serious (nerdy?) girl. That’s exactly what I need!”

It was a French girl from Paris named Cécile. First I had some doubts. How will she adapt to our simple village lifestyle? I couldn’t get rid of the stereotypes. It was difficult for me to picture a “French Mademoiselle” watering our palm trees with a bucket in C+35 heat, washing dishes and sleeping in our “escape room” equipped with nothing more than a fan, a bed and a cold shower. However, Cécile was eager to take the job, and miraculously even ready to arrive with a short notice on the 1st of November.
When Cécile just got off the truck in front of our gate I thought: “OMG she’s so pretty!” Later on I discovered also that she is extremely shy and IMHO beauty + shyness = double charm.

Eating little and working lots, to my impression always much more than needed, Cécile turned out to be a dream volunteer! Sometimes I even had a guilty feeling looking at her going around our garden with a water hose many times a day (after many months of drought our 5 meter water well got dry and we had to water our garden in patches), collecting dry leaves from the ground, learning how to make cake or getting stressed in the kitchen while trying to cook something for lunch that our cranky maid Dadi might approve. Dadi, by the way, gave some hard time to Cécile and her French cuisine. Statistically only one of 3 dishes cooked by Cécile received a dry “está bom” compliment. However, in the end they made friends and Cécile even got invited to visit Dadi’s house in Mangue Seco – an honor which neither me nor Anna were never granted.
The best thing about having Cécile at Atlantis was the fact that I gained a great new friend. I never imagined one can order those by clicking volunteer ads on workaway.org ;-) !

After spending almost the whole day together at the pousada and going out at night often for our classic drinks&forró fun we became very close. Cécile turned out to be a very fun person to hang out with and now when I am looking back at the time we spent – we had so much fun! Hiking, surfing, and (even!) stand-up paddling together, watching sunsets, getting drunk, dancing, gossiping, making fun of each other, and (not to forget) having a lot of meaningful conversations, which is a rare thing to happen between people in Jeri.

So, yeah, until now each time I water the garden or eat water-melon, I remember her and how much fun we had and I really hope to see Cécile somewhere around the planet again!

And, by the way, the workaway project is off at Atlantis for now, to a certain point maybe because Cécile was too good to surpassed by any other volunteers that might appear after ;-)

В итоге ВСЯ (and i meant it!)

It's getting windy here! [by Marina]

We are close to the middle of July, and it's getting really windy!

Yesterday our friend Marko Berger, owner of the BLU Kitesurfing school in Jeri registered 32 knots during his session. I checked wikipedia - that's considered to be a squall already (шквальный ветер), and this would be our weather for the next 6 months, or so...

Normally we should be expecting at least 15-20 knots on daily basis till August, then 23-30 knots from September to November, then back to 20-25 knots till February.
Among other wind and kitesurfing spots in the world Jericoacoara has probably the most stable wind, and we are very proud of it. It's time to get your equipment wet, ladies and gentlemen!

Also, thanks to this wind even with 300 sunny days per year and average temperature above +30 we don't suffer from heat - the stormy Jeri wind blows it all away :-)

[by Marina]

before and after - continued - back and front yard [by Marina]

As mentioned before by Anna, we got sucked into a never ending list of little improvements all around our pousada. Hopefully, we are going to finish all works by next week.

This post is dedicated to the back and front yard.

The backyard, or the passage behind our kitchen leading to the storage room and room nr.6 has always been looking kind of untidy, so we tried to do our best without involving ourselves into major construction changes. Just some make-up - cleaning&painting...

Backyard - before, with the ugly roof for the gas bottle, dirty walls and electric cable in the middle
Backyard - after, with the new cabinet for the gas bottle, painted walls, new grass, plants in pots and decorated cable
Yes, in an old house like ours we've got to be creative sometimes when trying to make things look nicer. After some pondering we decided not to mess with the fragile walls of the old fisherman house because of the electric cable that takes electricity out to the front yard and left it at the same place, however, gave it a new look. Within just a couple of hours it was covered with the decorative rustic rope and then we hanged the polished shells from an old necklace on it. This necklace by the way I bought a few years ago in Moscow at Izmailovskiy Market for RUB25 and used it maybe once ever since.

The decorated electric cable with the shells from an old necklace
Backyard - before. Different angle.
Backyard - after. Different angle.
The top of the parasol in the front was renewed a few months ago, now the table was polished, the chairs repaired and painted red, and the Bougainville tree cut and pushed to grow on top of the hotel sign, the old moldy bench removed and stone walls washed.

Pousada Atlantis entrance - before. The way it looked when we first saw it.
Pousada Atlantis entrance - 7 months after.
Actually, when you live here and see things every day, you don't notice all the changes. So, we got very impressed ourselves when compared the actual situation with the old pictures :-)

Daily life - rainy season, garden, the angry bird, Luna goes for a swim [by Marina]

So, the low (rainy) season has started, however, it's not raining too much, as mentioned before in Anna's post.
We are happy to notice that our occupancy rates are higher then forecasted and by the middle of the month we already reached the monthly lowest target. However, due to little amount of tourists and high competition among half-empty pousadas in Jeri, the rates are drastically dropping down and we have to implement some cost-saving measures in order to be able to still make some profit.

Low season also means more free time for the owners and therefore a good possibility to do some maintenance here and there. One of these days I collected a bunch of flower pots that were standing around the garden and painted them red - our Russian signature color :-)

While I was busy with the pots, spray, solvent, and all my artistic mess in the area behind the kitchen, the piririguá bird that made a nest on top of our palm tree got stressed up by the noise and decided to protect the chicks (or, the eggs? whatever it had there in the nest).

Actually, I wasn't even aware of the bird's nest on our palm-tree until that moment. I don't go around the garden randomly looking for some piririguá nests, you know... So, it was quite a shock for me when one of the small coconuts fell right next to me, I look up and see the angry bird some meters above - I bet the piririguá was aiming at me, but it missed it. I saw more coconuts around the nest, ready to be launched and withdrew myself closer to our closet. You have to respect the local inhabitants, you know ;-)

After 2-3 weeks of regular rain, many trees in the garden got full of flowers - all at the same time. It's so amazing to look around one day and find so many nice surprises here and here, some of the flowers that came out we weren't even aware of!

Luna also enjoyed some benefits of the "color-it-red" campaign and now she's a proud owner of 2 clay bowls matching her new collor.

That morning she got me worried by the way.

Half and hour after breakfast I noticed that she was gone. Normally she hangs around the breakfast area or stays in the street in front of pousada, but now she was really gone. I even walked around the neighbor trash cans to see if she hasn't fully satisfied with her breakfast, but nothing.
She showed up one hour later happily wagging the tail, dripping wet&salty. I figured she decided to take a swim in the sea after breakfast. Well, it's a good start of a day, I must admit, however, she could have left a quick note or something "gone to the beach, brb, kisses", couldn’t she? ;-)

"This corner of the world is like me in many ways..." Daily Life [by Marina]

You know, sometimes there comes a day when everything's just perfect, and you are in the happiest mood, and everything you do, turns out right the way it should, and you end up feeling high because of all this harmony and unconditional happiness, and feel like you are floating inside of a big shiny ball and nothing can get through it to hurt you? Today is one of these days, and i couldn't help but share it with whoever reads this post.

I've been getting up early recently, and even though I'm a late bird by nature, I guess getting up really early, at the sunrise, gives people good vibes, at least it gives me good vibes, if I get to be outside to see the nature waking up.

Yesterday, I went for jogging through the hills at 5 a.m, and today I had my first (and only because it takes only one to learn) class of stand-up paddling (SUP) at 6.30 a.m.

The class was fantastic! I had a lot of fun falling down from the board again and again  ploff-ploff! while learning how to pass by the waves and even regret that I didn't ask anybody to film this "Charlie Chaplin" action on video.
However, after all, stand-up turned out to be quite easy (at least comparing to surfing) and I even rode my first wave by the end of the class! :-)
So, now I am busy looking for a SUP board to buy, which turns out to be quite expensive and there's not much offer on the Brazilian market because SUP is considerably new here. So, ironically most of the offers I saw online are from Santos where I lived for 6 years and never even tried it!

We have our first friend-guest Claire from France who knows Anna for many years already and we are very happy to have her with us!
While the girls are enjoying their morning at the beach, I take my first shower of the day, and work my morning shift at the reception. Today is an easy day, nobody's checkin-out, so I just reply some quotations and go get some groceries for lunch. Walking through the village is always funny, even after 6 years in Santos, I still can't get used to meeting so many people you know in just 3-4 minutes and saying "Hi!" to everybody as you are passing by the streets - a real village life ;-)

Back to pousada, cooking some pork sausage-tomato-potato stew for girls, sweating like hell, dancing to Jamiroquai and baby-sitting the dog of our guests from room nr.2. Then comes my second shower of the day.

Lunch is ready, looks like everybody liked it, the girls are back from the beach and I'm writing this post, attending customers and sending customers which are popping up from the street to our neighbours in order to earn some comission - doing all this at the same time - multi-tasking is something that a small hotel owner needs to do a lot ;-)

Soon I am off my shift, maybe will take a nap or do manicure, will take my third shower of the day for sure ;-) and tonight is Vanessa da Mata's free concert at the beach, all the friends are going of course, and I am looking forward to have a lot of fun and feel very HAPPY TODAY!

My tune and lyrics of the day: Jamiroquai
"Corner of the world".

Little darlin' don't you see the sun is shining
Just for you, only today
If you hurry you can get a ray on you, come with me, just toplay
Like every humming bird and bumblebee
Every sunflower, cloud and every tree
I feel so much a part of this
Nature's got me high and it's beautiful
I'm with this deep eternal universe
From death until rebirth
This corner of the earth is like me in many ways
I can sit for hours here and watch the emerald feathers play
On the face of it I'm blessed
When the sunlight comes for free
I know this corner of the earth it smiles at me
So inspired of that there's nothing left to do or say
Think I'll dream, 'til the stars shine
The wind it whispers and the clouds don't seem to care
And I know inside, that it's all mine
It's the chorus of the breakin' dawn
The mist that comes before the sun is born
To a hazy afternoon in May
Nature's got me high and it's so beautiful
I'm with this deep eternal universe from death until rebirth
You know that this corner of the earth is like me in many ways
I can sit for hours here and watch the emerald feathers play
On the face of it I'm blessed
When the sunlight comes for free
I know this corner of the earth it smiles at me

Murder of the Imperial Palm [by Marina]

So, we had a favourite little Imperial Palm tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roystonea_oleracea) growing outside of our fence.

We were watering it, and trying to protect from cows and donkeys, hoping that many years later it will grow into a gorgeous palm tree and will delight anybody who passes by our street with it's beauty.

Then yesterday some evil person reached through the little fence around the palm, torn off the top (the growing part) of it and left it laying on the sand. The 2 year old palm died from the hands of the crazy person :-(((

According to the results of our forensic analysis, the palm tree wasn't damadged by an animal, and yes by a human being. I have one suspect, but have no proof in order to accuse the murderer of the palm.

We got very sad but then decided to plant a new Imperial Palm in our garden.
Looking for a seedling now ... :-)

Daily life [by Marina]

Days are flying by quickly and we keep on being busy with arranging things at our new place.
Today Anna made a heroic effort to clean the storage room and separate useful things from the old crap.
Some objects that she found are really puzzling.
For example, anybody can explain what exactly is this rusty thing that looks like 2 matching metal plates with a few hard (resin?) balls inside?

Anyhow, we found out that we have twice more space then we thought!
Meanwhile, I continued my never ending battle on the bureaucratic field...7 hours straight of calling, e-mailing... Talking about bureaucracy is boring, so here are instead some more curious details of our daily life.

A few days ago a couple of baby-ducks got separated from the flock and Dady spotted them out lost quacking in front of our gate.
A real village girl, she quickly pushed them inside of our backyard. We waited for half a day, and as the owner of the ducks never showed up, we decided that Dady can take them to her mother, who breeds ducks for sale.

The mango season is starting and inland is full of fruit laying on the ground.
My Russian-Soviet instinct told me to run and collect but before I could figure out where&how, a local village man showed up at our gate selling wild mangoes R$5 (USD 2.7 / Euro 2 / NOK 15.7 / RUB 16.9) per 25 fruits.

Wild magoes (collected from the ground especially) are not so delicious/easy to eat fresh, so we are going to make some jam out of them I guess (tomorrow!).

And the last one for today: tropical climate makes you drink a lot of water through the day. And I hate the tastlessness of plane still water, it makes me wanna puke! So, I enjoy mine always with some slice of lemon. Dady noticed this habbit of mine and came up with a spooky warning: according the the expert opinion of the Northeastern  people regular consumption of lemon decreases female firtility factor :-O Or, in Dady's simple words: "Stop drinking water with lemon or you won't have kids". Go figure...

Daily life - buggy accident [by Marina]

It's after midnight and I am tired of fighting with the telephone operator, internet banking, credit card machine, writing e-mails to our accountant and all the rest. Let's finish the working night with a short post!

It's funny how even on our quiet Rua Das Dunas (the Dunes Street) where we have no more then 1 car per half-an-hour passing by... one perfect morning there happened a pretty serious accident - one buggy bumped into another, and the last one hit the wall of the neighbour pousada, just in front of our porch.

A local driver on a full speed hit the buggy being manoeuvred by a gringo kite-surfer who was just going to start his beautiful tropical day at the beach in the company of his girlfriend.

2 minutes later a crowd gathered around for a small show. Not every day we get to see something like that on our sandy streets. Luckily there were no victims.
Later on the local driver went home to sleep after his busy night work and the gringo surfer went to pay the damage of the rented buggy.

Sometimes life is a bitch even in a tropical paradise.

Who reads our blog [by Marina]

Writing a blog is a new experience both for me and for Anna.
The whole idea of sharing some (sometimes) private information with anybody who would just bother to click and read is quite ambiguous for me, and it took me time to get used to it. For sure, I would never do it if not for the project with the hotel.
On the other hand, it feels nice to share some thoughts, experiences and/or impressions with the "whole world".

When some Facebook friends comment on announced posts on my wall, at least I know who has read it, and what they think about it.
Now, when I check the statistics of our blog views on blogger.com, sometimes I get curious - who are all these people - our readers?
For example, during this week, people from the following list of countries have read our recent posts:
Brazil  36
United States  32
Norway           28
Russia 21
France 17
Switzerland    15
Denmark         7
Germany         6
Netherlands    5
Ukraine           4

Once I had an idea to ask all these users to present themselves by posting a comment (on volunteer basis of course, and only to satisfy my curiosity) but then a friend of Anna's mentioned that there's some difficulty with the blogger.com’s interface and posting comments in our blog is not easy - is that true?

Anyhow, after some time I guess I will get used to the fact that somebody from a country where I have little or no acquaintances at all reads about our life here in Jeri :-)

What's up with the AC? (cultural differences) [by Marina]

I guess, it's time for us to start writing about some cultural differences that we, as hotel owners, notice in the behaviour of our customers.
Here are some curious observations about usage of airconditioning.

At first one might think that travelers from the countries with colder climate (like those from Nothern Europe) may use more airconditioning here in the tropics of Jeri, and those coming from the neighbour regions, for instance, the North-East of Brazil, used to the Brazilian heat, will not need aircon at all, right? Wrong!

Tourists from countries like Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden... rarely or never use the AC here.

At the same time any hotel owner in Jeri will tell you that the first thing that a Brazilian guest would do after walking into his hotel room is turning on the AC (and TV). Less chance of that if he/she is coming from the South of Brazil, where the climate is cold, similar to European. If he/she is coming from Fortaleza or Natal, the AC will be on 24x7 even if the nights are fresh like now.

I guess, it happens because in Brazil because of the hot climate the ACs are very common and used on daily basis, so, eventually people end up turining them on by simple habbit, without thinking if they really need it or not.

What I miss and what I don't ... [by Marina]

Following Anna's earlier post, and without any more preface:

WHAT I MISS
- Qualified and well-equipped medical help
- Some technology: broadband internet, reliable telephone connection, good high pressure hot shower or bath (the last I've been missing since I left Moscow)
- Supermarkets with good choice of products and availability of quality products and services of all kinds in general
- Driving a car (not having a car though!)
- My cosmetologist Suzan
- Traveling (it's not easy to get out of Jeri, and logistics is not the only difficulty)
- Dressing up or wearing something chique sometimes

WHAT I DON'T MISS
- Having a job, and having a boss and having people telling me what to do and/or asking somebody's permission to do something
- Monday-Friday 08.00-17.00 routine life, Sunday night agony thinking of the new week of work to start
- Commuting, traffic jams, wasting time to get from point A to point B
- TV and news-papers, mass media in general
- Winter, cold weather
- Shopping centers and malls
- Doing make-up every day
- Having to be punctual, being afraid to be late for some appointment or meeting
- Having to carry a mobile phone everywhere I go (this I have to start doing again though, as the business grows... urghh)

Ribbit! [by Marina]

I can't help but getting impressed by our toads!
As mentioned by Anna before, they come into the house at night for cat food.
There's one which likes taking a bath after it's meal.
First it eats, then it fits himself into cat's water bowl (cut from a plastic bottle) and sits there for hours.
Human presence doesn't frighten it (or, shall I say "him") at all.
Last night Anna poured some more water on top of him, and it looks like he enjoyed it ;-)

Then we changed the location of the cat food from the kitchen into the garden to keep our kitchen cleaner.
The toad actually discovered the new eating spot before the cat did *lol*

Got baptised by local parasites! [by Marina]

Alright! Finally! I got baptised by my first tropical parasite! :-)
Been sitting at night in a restaurant, a street dog peacefully sleeping under the table...

I "smartly" rest my feet on top of my favourite animal for a while... 1 day later, my toe starts hurting - what's that?
"Bicho de pé"! (Chigoe flea).

Thanks God, our cold-hearted maid Dady removed it from my toe quickly by using a simple needle!

Now I know: I am not afraid of the local parasites! :-)
